High Falls Grand Portage MN: A Majestic Waterfall Worth Visiting

Chasing Minnesota’s Tallest Waterfall: Our Hike to High Falls in Grand Portage

Some places leave you speechless before you even reach the destination. High Falls in Grand Portage was one of those places for us.

The drive along Minnesota’s North Shore is beautiful on its own, but as we made our way farther north toward Grand Portage State Park, it felt like we were leaving the busy world behind. Towering pines, rugged cliffs, and endless views of Lake Superior slowly gave way to one of the most unforgettable hikes we’ve experienced in Minnesota.

The trail to High Falls isn’t long or difficult, which makes it perfect for almost everyone. Instead of focusing on the challenge of the hike, you get to slow down and actually enjoy the journey. We found ourselves stopping often—not because we needed a break, but because every stretch of the trail seemed to offer another beautiful view worth taking in.

As we walked through the quiet forest, the sound of rushing water slowly grew louder. It’s one of those moments that builds anticipation with every step. Then suddenly, the trees open up, and there it is.

High Falls.

Standing 120 feet tall, it’s the highest waterfall in Minnesota, and seeing it in person is even more impressive than any photo could capture. The Pigeon River crashes over the rocky cliffs with incredible force, sending mist into the air and creating rainbows on sunny days. We stood there for a long time, simply taking it all in.

One of our favorite things about this waterfall is its unique location. The Pigeon River actually forms the border between Minnesota and Ontario, Canada, so while you’re standing at the overlook, you’re looking across two countries at once. It’s not every day you get to experience something like that.

The viewing platforms make it easy to admire the falls from different angles, and if you’re anything like us, you’ll end up taking way more photos than you planned. Every few minutes the light changes, the mist shifts, and the waterfall somehow looks completely different all over again.

What we appreciated most about this hike was how accessible it is. The paved trail is just over half a mile each way, making it an adventure that families, casual hikers, and experienced outdoor lovers can all enjoy. Sometimes the best views don’t require a strenuous climb, and High Falls is proof of that.

If you have extra time while you’re in the area, don’t rush back to the car. Grand Portage has so much more to offer than just the waterfall. The nearby Grand Portage National Monument shares the fascinating history of the Ojibwe people and the fur trade that helped shape this region. Learning about the area’s history gave us an even greater appreciation for the land we had just explored.

For hikers looking for a bigger adventure, the historic Grand Portage Trail offers a much longer trek following the same route voyageurs once traveled centuries ago. And if you’re chasing even more incredible North Shore views, Mount Josephine is another hike worth adding to your list.

One thing we loved most about this area is how peaceful it feels. Unlike some of Minnesota’s more crowded destinations, High Falls gives you space to slow down. We found ourselves lingering at the overlooks, listening to the roar of the waterfall and watching the river carve its way through the ancient rock. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why getting outside is so important.

Planning Your Visit

If you’re thinking about visiting High Falls, here are a few things we learned along the way:

  • The trail is paved, relatively flat, and wheelchair accessible.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, even though the hike is short.
  • Bring your camera—you’ll definitely want it.
  • Dogs are welcome on a leash.
  • Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon for fewer crowds and softer light for photos.
  • Take your time. The destination is incredible, but the peaceful walk through the forest is part of the experience.

Final Thoughts

High Falls isn’t just another waterfall to check off a bucket list.

It’s the kind of place that reminds you to slow down, breathe in the fresh North Shore air, and appreciate the wild beauty that Minnesota has to offer. Whether you’re road-tripping along Highway 61, exploring Grand Portage for the first time, or simply looking for an easy hike with an unforgettable payoff, this trail belongs on your list.

We left with full camera rolls, tired legs, and a renewed appreciation for the incredible places waiting to be explored in our own backyard.

If you ever find yourself in the far northeastern corner of Minnesota, don’t skip High Falls. Trust us—it’s one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve left.
