Why Pincushion Mountain Became One of Our Favorite North Shore Hikes
Some hikes are all about reaching the summit.
Others are about enjoying every step along the way.
Pincushion Mountain gave us both.
During our North Shore adventure, we were looking for a hike that wasn’t overly crowded but still promised incredible views of Lake Superior. After hearing so many people mention Pincushion Mountain near Grand Marais, we decided to see what all the hype was about.
Now we completely understand why it’s become one of our favorite stops on the North Shore.
The Trail Starts in the Quiet Woods
One of the things we loved most about this hike is how peaceful it feels right from the start.
The trail winds through a beautiful forest of towering pines, birch trees, and moss-covered rocks. It’s one of those places where everything seems to slow down. The only sounds we heard were birds singing overhead, leaves rustling in the breeze, and our boots crunching along the trail.
There wasn’t any rush to get to the top because the walk itself was just as enjoyable as the destination.
The trail is considered moderate, with a few steady climbs, but nothing that felt overwhelming. We found ourselves stopping often—not because we had to—but because the forest was simply too beautiful not to appreciate.
The View That Makes Every Step Worth It
Then we reached the overlook.
And wow.
The trees suddenly opened up to reveal one of the most breathtaking views we’ve seen along Minnesota’s North Shore.
Lake Superior stretched endlessly across the horizon, looking more like an ocean than a lake. From above, we could see Grand Marais tucked along the shoreline, the Sawtooth Mountains rolling into the distance, and miles of untouched forest surrounding us.
It was one of those views that photos never quite capture.
We ended up sitting on the rocks much longer than we expected, soaking in the scenery and enjoying the quiet. Sometimes the best part of hiking isn’t checking another trail off your list—it’s simply taking time to be present.
A Different Kind of North Shore Experience
What makes Pincushion Mountain special is that it feels a little more tucked away than some of the North Shore’s more famous hikes.
While places like Oberg Mountain and Gooseberry Falls often draw larger crowds, Pincushion offers a quieter experience without sacrificing incredible scenery. It feels like a hidden gem, even though it’s only a few minutes from downtown Grand Marais.
If you’re looking for a peaceful place to reconnect with nature, this hike delivers exactly that.
Every Season Has Its Own Beauty
It’s easy to imagine this trail looking completely different throughout the year.
In the fall, the hillsides would be bursting with brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. During winter, the trail system transforms into a destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Spring brings fresh greenery and wildflowers, while summer offers endless blue skies over Lake Superior.
No matter when you visit, Pincushion Mountain seems like one of those places that always has something new to offer.
Make a Day of Exploring
One thing we loved about this hike is how easy it is to pair with the rest of a North Shore adventure.
After our hike, we wandered through Grand Marais, grabbed something to eat, browsed a few local shops, and spent some time walking along the harbor. It’s the kind of town where it’s easy to lose track of time.
If you’re continuing your North Shore road trip, the Gunflint Trail begins just outside of town and offers even more opportunities for hiking, scenic overlooks, and wildlife spotting.

Tips Before You Go
If you’re planning your own hike to Pincushion Mountain, here are a few things we’d recommend:
- Wear comfortable hiking shoes since parts of the trail are rocky and have a few steady climbs.
- Bring water, especially during warmer months.
- Don’t rush to the overlook—the forest is part of the experience.
- If you’re visiting in the fall, plan extra time because you’ll probably stop for photos every few minutes.
- Pack a snack and enjoy it at the overlook. Trust us, it’s one of the best lunch spots on the North Shore.
Final Thoughts
Some hikes leave you with sore legs.
Others leave you with a full camera roll.
Pincushion Mountain gave us both—and we’d happily do it again.
It’s the kind of trail that reminds you why we keep coming back to Minnesota’s North Shore. The peaceful forest, the sweeping views of Lake Superior, and the quiet moments spent at the overlook all came together to create one of our favorite hiking memories.
If you’re planning a trip to Grand Marais, don’t skip this hike.
Slow down, enjoy the climb, and when you reach the overlook, take a moment to simply stand there and soak it all in.
We certainly did.
