Waking Up the Sleeping Giant
There’s something magical about driving into Sleeping Giant Provincial Park — the way the cliffs rise out of Lake Superior, the quiet of the boreal forest, and that unmistakable silhouette of the “Giant” lying across the horizon. For us, this trip was all about one goal: hiking to the top of Lion’s Head, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the entire park. We’d heard the trail was challenging but worth every step, and honestly… that’s exactly how it played out.

Starting the Hike:
Forest, Ferns & Fresh Air. The trail begins gently, winding through thick forest that feels untouched. The air was cool, earthy, and quiet except for the crunch of our boots and the occasional squirrel who clearly thought we were invading its territory. The first stretch is steady and peaceful. Lots of shade, perfect for warming up Beautiful mossy patches and ferns everywhere.
The Climb:
Steep, Sweaty & Totally Worth It. Once the trail starts climbing, it really climbs. This is where the hike earns its reputation. We took our time, stopped for water, and enjoyed those little breaks where the trees opened just enough to tease the views ahead. The terrain gets rocky, and there are a few spots where you’ll feel your legs working overtime. But the payoff? Unreal.
Reaching Lion’s Head:
A View You Don’t Forget Standing at the top of Lion’s Head feels like stepping onto the edge of the world. Lake Superior stretches endlessly, shimmering in blues and silvers. The cliffs drop dramatically below, and the wind carries that crisp, unmistakable northern scent. We just stood there for a moment — sweaty, tired, and absolutely thrilled.Panoramic views of Lake Superior. The Sleeping Giant cliffs in full dramatic form. Perfect spot for photos, deep breaths, and a snack break. It’s one of those places where you feel small in the best possible way.

Moments We Loved:
Mark pointing out every single cliff formation like a tour guide
Me trying to get the perfect photo without dropping my phone off the edge
The quiet — that rare, deep quiet you only get in places like this
The sense of accomplishment when we finally reached the top
