Our Ole Smoky Moonshine Tasting Experience: A Must-Do in Gatlinburg

Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery ended up being one of the highlights of our time in Gatlinburg.
We had heard people talking about the free tastings, the live music, and the fun atmosphere, but nothing quite prepared us for the energy the moment we walked through the doors. It wasn’t just another tourist stop—it felt like the heart of downtown Gatlinburg.
The smell of fresh moonshine, people laughing around the tasting bar, live bluegrass music playing in the background…it immediately felt like one of those places where everyone is simply having a good time.
More Than Just a Tasting
Walking into Ole Smoky, we honestly expected to sample a few flavors and move on.
Instead, we found ourselves staying much longer than we planned.
Our tasting host had everyone laughing from the very beginning. Between sharing stories about Appalachian moonshine traditions and cracking jokes with the group, they somehow made each sample feel like part of the experience instead of just another drink.
Even if whiskey or moonshine isn’t normally your thing, it’s hard not to have fun here.

We usually browse gift shops pretty quickly, but this one was actually worth exploring.
From locally made sauces and jams to fun moonshine-inspired gifts, there were plenty of unique souvenirs. Of course, we couldn’t leave without bringing home a few jars of our favorite flavors to share with family and friends.

- Bring your ID—tastings are for guests 21 and older.
- Don’t be afraid to try flavors you normally wouldn’t order. Some of our favorites were the ones we almost skipped.
- Take time to explore downtown Gatlinburg before or after your tasting. Everything is within walking distance, making it easy to spend an entire afternoon here.
- If you discover a favorite flavor, buy it while you’re there—you may not find every variety back home.
