Discovering Ouimet Canyon: One of Ontario’s Most Incredible Hidden Gems

That was Ouimet Canyon for us.
While exploring the Thunder Bay area, we had heard people mention this incredible canyon tucked away just off the highway. We weren’t quite sure what to expect, but after pulling into Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park, we quickly realized this wasn’t just another scenic stop.

One of our favorite things about visiting Ouimet Canyon is that you don’t have to hike for miles to experience something incredible.
The walk to the viewpoints is short, easy, and winds through a peaceful boreal forest. Tall pines, fresh northern air, and the sound of birds made the stroll just as enjoyable as the destination itself.
As we followed the boardwalk, we caught glimpses of the canyon through the trees, but nothing prepared us for that first full view.

The canyon is massive.
Towering cliffs plunge nearly 330 feet below, creating a dramatic landscape that feels completely out of place in the middle of the forest. Looking across the canyon, it’s hard to believe that glaciers carved this incredible formation thousands of years ago.
The sheer size of it makes you feel incredibly small.
We found ourselves walking from one viewing platform to the next because each angle offered something different. One overlook highlighted the rugged rock walls, while another opened up sweeping views of the entire canyon stretching into the distance.

What we loved most about Ouimet Canyon wasn’t just the view.
It was the silence.
Unlike some of the busier parks we’ve visited, there was a peacefulness here that made it easy to slow down. The only sounds were the wind moving through the trees and the occasional bird soaring overhead.
If you look closely, you might even spot peregrine falcons gliding along the cliffs. The canyon also creates its own cool microclimate, allowing rare arctic and alpine plants to survive here long after the last glaciers disappeared.

The boardwalks and lookout platforms make it possible for almost anyone to experience the canyon without a strenuous hike. It’s the perfect stop whether you’re road-tripping through Northwestern Ontario or spending a few days exploring the Thunder Bay area.
Sometimes the most memorable adventures don’t require hours of hiking.
Sometimes all you have to do is take a short walk and let nature do the rest.
